On the one hand, the revisions are subtle. On the other hand, the new textual and directorial choices offer a very different view of the story of French diplomat Renee Gallimard and his twenty-year relationship with the Chinese Opera performer and spy Song Liling. As Taymor and Hwang explained at a talk about the show at the Asia Society of New York on 3 November , their approach to revising the text took into consideration present public discussion and awareness of nonbinary genders, the growth of China as a superpower, and details about the true story of diplomat Bernard Bourisco and his lover Shi Pei Pu, which were not available to Hwang when he wrote the first version.

The story of the opera Madama Butterfly, with its Japanese heroine who kills herself after being forsaken by an American cad, formed a leitmotif to the original M. Butterfly, with references to it throughout the play. Although the revival also refers to the opera at the beginning and the end, and includes a small excerpt, it does not recapitulate this idea continually. Instead, it attempts to balance out the proposal of this Western love story with references to the Chinese opera Butterfly Lovers. In this tragic love story, which echoes some of the gender themes in M. Butterfly, a young woman, Zhu Yingtai, disguises herself as a man in order to study in the capital. She falls in love with Liang Shanbo, a young male scholar, who believes she is a boy.

Lang dies of heartbreak. Their spirits, now a pair of butterflies, fly away together. When Gallimard Clive Owen first comes to visit Song Jin Ha at the Chinese opera, Butterfly Lovers is the opera Song has performed and Song clarifies the story for him in the dressing room after the show. Another crucial, but again subtle, change occurs in the placement of when Song claims that he is pregnant. In the new version, it comes at the point when Gallimard, frustrated with the constraints of his love affair, pressures Song for more intimacy and to take off his clothes. While this moment also occurs in the original, in this production it is set up so that it leads Song to claim pregnancy as an act of desperation meant to keep his deception from being revealed. It comes off as a spur of the moment reaction to save the situation in contrast to the more planned project to further ensnare Gallimard that is in the original.

This moment also reflects the overall shift in the demeanors of the main characters from the first version. In the early production, Gallimard, played by John Lithgow, is somewhat smug, fully enthralled with his conquest. Song, especially at the end, is revealed as vindictive in his triumph over Gallimard. Clive Owen portrays Gallimard as a befuddled, lost soul, looking for something meaningful in his life. While the line appears in the original, its emphasis has shifted in this new context.

A scene in which Song is dragged through the streets and publicly criticized, after obviously having been beaten, clarifies his own drive to find ways to survive within the regime. The production includes a fully staged excerpt of a revolutionary ballet, which contrasts to the Chinese opera scenes it displays early on, offering a third model of performance, besides Chinese and western opera, as an expression of cultural ideals. Song is not just facing the imperialism of the West, but a restructuring of Chinese ideas and values that denigrate the lush performance tradition he embraces, just as it disdains the beautiful dresses he cherishes. The revival, inspired by the idea of a Chinese puzzle box scenic design by Paul Steinberg , uses a series of large flats, continually rearranged to form new spatial configurations.

These blank flats sometimes display images that can set the tone as well as the place of the action. Images of large Chinese opera painted face characters adorn the flats during the Chinese Opera scenes while bright red and yellow designs in the style of propaganda posters—decked with the large, imposing, smiling face of Chairman Mao, hovering over crowds of cheerful young supporters, repeated over several flats— dominate the setting for the Revolutionary Ballet. The flats allow the space to alternate between open expanses and confined areas. The opening scene finds Gallimard in a very claustrophobic cell, stuck in a corner between two of these flats as he bemoans his fate.

The revival, which closed six weeks short of its initially scheduled run, was neither a critical nor a popular success. The performances were decidedly not as gripping or compelling as those in the original, and the overall staging was dour compared to the vibrant and highly theatrical production. The show did not try to capitalize on a dramatic onstage transformation, a highlight of the original as B. Wong took off his makeup and recast his physiognomy in front of the audience. Does the revival seem dull because of its attempt to establish a more nuanced relationship between its protagonists and a less polarized cultural situation? Or does the new reading not work simply because it undermines the dramatic tensions driving the plot?
